Shoplifting in England and Wales continues to rise according to police recorded crimes – Usdaw calls for action

Shopworkers’ trade union leader John Hannett has called for Government action in light of the Office for National Statistics today reporting an 8% increase in police recorded incidents of shoplifting during 2017, continuing the trend of a 31% increase over the last decade.

Scottish Protection of Workers Bill gets strong support from the retail union Usdaw

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has responded to a consultation on a Protection of Workers Bill, which is being promoted in the Scottish parliament by Daniel Johnson MSP (Labour, Edinburgh Southern). The union fully supports the creation of a new offence of assault against a worker in the retail sector.

Usdaw calls for support for a new law protecting Scottish shopworkers from violence

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw and businesses are supporting a new law to protect workers. Labour MSP Daniel Johnson is promoting a Bill that would create new offences regarding the assault of shopworkers and others, like bar and pub staff, who are involved in the sale and supply of age-restricted good and services. The consultation period on the Bill closes this Friday 20 April.

ACS reports a 65% increase in convenience store crime – Usdaw calls for action

Shopworkers’ trade union leader John Hannett has called for action after yet more evidence of retail crime on the increase. The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) today reports nearly a million thefts from UK convenience stores in 2017, which is a 65% increase on the previous year.

Five years on and Usdaw stats show that Government reforms to CICS denied compensation for nearly half of workers injured by a criminal

Government reforms to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS) took effect in November 2012 and stats released by Usdaw today show that applications for compensation by the union on behalf of members injured by a criminal have almost halved, down by 47.4%.

Shopworkers’ trade union leader John Hannett has questioned whether police cuts are having an effect on crime as the Office for National Statistics today details a 10% increase in police recorded incidents of shoplifting during the year to September 2017, continuing the trend of a 30% increase over the last decade.

Protection of Workers Bill launched by Daniel Johnson MSP with support of Usdaw and retailers

Labour MSP Daniel Johnson has today launched his proposal for a new law to protect workers. Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw and businesses are supporting the change, with the consultation launched today at a Scotmid store in Edinburgh.
