Officials of the shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw have today delivered 1,375 individual responses to Belfast City Council’s consultation on extending Sunday trading.

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has today responded to a Belfast City Council consultation with a resounding ‘no’ to extended Sunday trading, after their survey came out overwhelmingly against. The same survey in November 2016 found 85% of shopworkers were opposed to longer Sunday trading.

ICTU 2017 Conference - Usdaw to call for support for shopworkers on Sunday trading

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw is sending a delegation of members and officials to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ Biennial Conference in Belfast, where they will be seeking the support of delegates against extended Sunday trading. The conference runs from 4 to 6 July at the Assembly Buildings.

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has welcomed tonight’s vote, by 37 to 10 at Belfast City Council’s Annual General Meeting, backing a decision of the Strategic Policy & Resources Committee to reject extending Sunday trading hours on 18 weekends a year by exploiting a loophole in the law and designating the city centre a holiday resort.

Usdaw welcomes the debate generated by a 220,000 signature petition opposing Boxing Day trading

Shopworkers' trade union Usdaw has welcomed a debate generated by a petition that calls for shops to close on Boxing Day, which is hosted by change.org and has now reached 220,000 signatures. Last year the Government responded to a similar petition by saying they are not proposing to ban shops from opening on Boxing Day.
