Usdaw welcomes the introduction of a protection of public-facing workers bill and urges the Government to back it

Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed the launch of the Abuse of Public-Facing Workers (Offences) Bill by Olivia Blake MP (Labour, Sheffield Hallam). The Bill was introduced in the House of Commons today under the 10-minute rule and is scheduled for a second reading on Friday 28 January 2022.

Retail trade union Usdaw welcomes interventions from Labour frontbenchers urging the Government to follow Scotland’s lead and introduce a protection of shopworkers law. Responding to the Police Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill second reading debate last night, the Government Minister indicated an amendment is still under consideration.

Government must commit to a protection of shopworkers law, Usdaw disappointed by response to cross-party calls

Retail trade union Usdaw is disappointed by today’s Government response to a report from a cross-party committee of MPs that recommended a new criminal offence to protect shopworkers, following a shocking upsurge in violence and abuse. The Government has a further opportunity to indicate a change of heart at the second reading of their flagship crime bill next Tuesday in the House of Lords.
