Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed two amendments to the Government’s Criminal Justice Bill that have been tabled by shadow policing minister Alex Norris MP (Labour/Co-op Nottingham North). The draft legislation is due to begin its remaining stages in the House of Commons on Wednesday 15 May 2024, when these amendments could be debated and voted on by all MPs.

#ShopKind Week: Usdaw joins the call for respect for shopworkers struggling in a retail crime epidemic

Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed today’s launch of the national #ShopKind Week, which encourages shoppers to treat staff with respect. UK-wide polling highlights that 31% of customers are more anxious when they shop and 36% have witnessed violence and abuse towards shopworkers while shopping.

ADM 2024: Usdaw delegates call for significant reform of the regulation of the sale of vape products

Alarming 37% increase in shoplifting across England and Wales – Usdaw reports a doubling of violence against shopworkers

Retail trade union Usdaw is deeply concerned by today’s police recorded crime statistics for England and Wales showing that in 2023 there was a 37% increase in shoplifting. This continues the trend of persistent quarterly increases since the pandemic and has now risen to the highest level in 20 years.

Government urged by Usdaw not to dilute a protection of shopworkers law

Retail trade union Usdaw has today given evidence to the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, as part of their investigation into violence and abuse towards retail workers. The union took the opportunity to urge Ministers not to dilute protections for retail workers when they introduce a promised standalone offence for assaulting and abusing shopworkers.
