Usdaw alarmed by reports of Sainsbury's and Asda offer to the CMA of 150 store closures

Shopworkers' trade union Usdaw has long called for the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to protect jobs, stores and high streets through the Sainsbury's and Asda merger process. So the union, which represents staff in Sainsbury's, Argos and Asda in Northern Ireland, is alarmed by reports that the companies could be offering to sell 150 stores in an attempt to address CMA concerns.

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has been campaigning for a protection of shopworkers amendment to the Offensive Weapons Bill, which attracted cross-party support. The Government responded with a round-table discussion with Usdaw and retail employers, which has led to the promise of a ‘call for evidence’ to inform future Government action to protect shopworkers.
