Usdaw welcomes Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s Five Missions for a Better Britain

Date: 23 February 2023 Shopworkers’ union Usdaw has welcomed the speech given in Manchester today, in which Keir Starmer outlined five missions that put the economy, climate change, the NHS, skills, and law and order at the heart of the 2024 manifesto.
The plan is intended to put an end to sticking plaster politics and deliver growth, stability and certainty across the country. The five missions are:

  • Secure the highest sustained growth in the G7.
  • Build an NHS fit for the future.
  • Make Britain’s streets safe.
  • Break down the barriers to opportunity at every stage.
  • Make Britain a clean energy superpower.

Usdaw General Secretary Paddy Lillis says: “Keir Starmer has today set out a bold plan to renew and transform Britain. A Labour Government will deliver a stronger economy that gives people the respect they deserve, provides real economic security, more resilient public services and delivers prosperity in every part of Britain.

“Labour has a proud track record of delivering for Usdaw members and the country when in power. By contrast, the Tory Government has lurched from one crisis to another, without a coherent long-term plan.

“Our members are facing a cost of living crisis, with prices for food and fuel rising, energy bills soaring and real wages falling. At the heart of the cost of living crisis is the Conservatives’ 12 years of austerity policies which made people worse off and trashed our public services. They have failed to deliver on their promise to “build back better”.

“Keir Starmer rightly recognises that people are working harder, but standing still; simply surviving, when they should be thriving. Labour will deliver for workers with a commitment to grow the economy and raise living standards for everyone, not just a privileged few. Labour’s New Deal for Workers, delivered in the first 100 days of Government, will give workers the dignity of a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work and security. Keir Starmer offers the hope and change our members need. The time is up for the Tories, we need a general election and a Labour Government to put Britain back on track.”
