Keir Starmer offers hope for working people while the Tories are mired in economic chaos – Usdaw says it’s time for Labour

Date: 27 September 2022 Retail trade union general secretary Paddy Lillis has welcomed today’s keynote address by Labour leader Keir Starmer to the annual conference in Liverpool.
Paddy Lillis - Usdaw General Secretary says: “Today we saw a leader and future Prime Minister who prides himself on standing with working people and one who will govern for working people. In contrast the Tories are continuing their 12 years of failure by losing control of the economy and causing a run on the pound; all for giving away unfunded tax cuts to the rich, not supporting workers struggling to make ends meet.

“Keir Starmer rightly identified that people are working harder, but standing still; simply surviving, when they should be thriving. Today he offered hope to workers with a commitment to grow the economy and raise living standards for everyone, not just a privileged few. Saying that the aims of the first term of a Labour government are to have ‘defeated the cost-of-living crisis’ and lifted the ‘clouds of anxiety’.

“Promising a new deal for working people within the first 100 days of a Labour Government. A new deal that will end low-paid insecure employment and give workers the dignity of a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work and security of employment. Keir Starmer offers the hope and change our members need. The time is up for the Tories, we need a general election and a Labour Government to put Britain back on track.”
