Usdaw celebrates decades of progress towards LGBT+ equality, but much more needs to be done

Campaigners from the retail trade union Usdaw are joining the West Lothian Pride event and march this weekend, 26 July, to celebrate progress towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Plus (LGBT+) equality and focus on the need to right ongoing injustices going forwards. Tony Doonan – Usdaw regional secretary for Scotland says: “LGBT+ people in Britain have seen extraordinary advances towards equality in the last two decades. As trade unionists, we can be proud of the part we played in those achievements, but serious problems remain and we still have work to do. Prejudice and discrimination impact the lives of many LGBT+ people and Pride has a vital role in visibly making a stand against LGBT+ phobia and hatred and raising awareness of the fact that the struggle for equality has not yet been won.

“Being in a union can and does make a difference. Usdaw gives space to LGBT+ members to come together to share experiences and identify priorities and concerns. We provide reps with the information and resources they need to fully support LGBT+ members in the workplace and work with employers to build safe and inclusive workplaces. West Lothian Pride shows that together we will continue the struggle for full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.”
