In his first speech as leader, at the special conference held at Congress House, the home of the Trades Union Congress, Andy Burnham pledged to unite the Labour Party, rebuild trust in politics, devolve power to communities across the UK and deliver for working people.
Usdaw has welcomed these commitments and is urging the new Labour leader to ensure they are matched by action that delivers real improvements for the union's members.
Usdaw general secretary Joanne Thomas says: "Usdaw proudly nominated Andy Burnham for Labour leader, and I am delighted to congratulate him on his election.
"Andy has set a bold vision that seeks to unite the Labour Party, rebuild communities and restore hope to working people. His commitment to tackling regional inequality, strengthening public services, revitalising local economies, investing in education and skills, bringing power into local communities reflects an important commitment to Labour values, which we welcome.
"Our members will now rightly expect that vision to be translated into action. Delivering Labour's New Deal for Working People in full must be an early priority. That means ending exploitative zero-hours contracts by giving all workers the right to a contract that reflects the hours they regularly work, banning fire and rehire, strengthening workplace rights and introducing restrictions on bosses using technology to spy on their employees.
"Usdaw looks forward to working constructively with him and the Labour Government to ensure that working people see the benefits of the hope and renewal he promised."
