Joanne Thomas – Usdaw general secretary and chair of Labour Unions (TULO) says: “Andy Burnham’s victory is proof that hope can defeat hate. It is a stunning win, given the local elections backdrop, and shows that Labour can convince voters that right-wing divisive politics is not the way forward.

“I’d like to thank Usdaw members and all trade unionists who gave up their own time to come to Makerfield and support Andy over the last few weeks. He will be a superb constituency MP and a strong advocate for the people and communities that Andy will now serve.

“This is the beginning of Labour’s fightback from the dismal May election results. We now look towards delivery of the change promised in 2024 and earning a second term of Labour in Government.”
