Usdaw calls for an end to LGBT+ harassment and welcomes the ‘power of communities’ theme

Retail trade union Usdaw is marking the annual International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT), on May 17, with a call for action to tackle the bullying, harassment and discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people at work. The union welcomes the 2025 theme of ‘the power of communities’, which highlights the vital role that connection, solidarity and shared purpose play in driving change — both for individuals and social justice movements.

Now, more than ever, LGBT+ workers need allies in their workplaces and in their communities. This year’s theme is a call for unity and one that aligns with the core values of trade unionism. It highlights the strength and resilience that emerges from our collective solidarity, recognising the contributions of human rights groups, LGBT+ organisations and millions of people, including trade union reps and members, who support and defend LGBT+ equality in and outside of work.

Paddy Lillis – Usdaw General Secretary says: “Harassment, including sexual harassment, is one of the biggest problems our LGBT+ members face in the workplace. The Equality Act makes it clear that harassment and so called ‘jokes’ or ‘banter’ are unlawful. Employers must deal with any incidents of harassment quickly and effectively and take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment from happening in the first place.

“Too many LGBT+ workers still don’t feel safe enough to be ‘out’ about their sexual orientation or gender identity at work. We welcome this year’s theme of unity and solidarity. Trade unions operate on the principle of an ‘injury to one is an injury to all’. We know that where harassment goes unchallenged in workplaces, it affects everyone. Usdaw believes all workers have a right to a safe and supportive working environment where they can be themselves without fear of harassment or discrimination.

“We campaign all year round to tackle harassment at work, encouraging activists and members to ‘call it out’. We also work with employers to negotiate workplace policies and procedures that aim to prevent harassment and ensure incidents are dealt with fairly, quickly and confidentially. Today, on IDAHOBIT, we put the spotlight on homophobia, transphobia and biphobia, standing together with our LGBT+ colleagues speaking out against harassment at work and demonstrating the power of trade unions in our workplaces and in our communities.”
