At last year's General Election, voters backed Labour's manifesto. The manifesto included a plan to ban exploitative zero-hours contracts, give people on short hours contracts a new right to contracts that reflect their normal hours of work and give you rights from your first day at work. The Government has delivered on this promise by tabling the Employment Rights Bill, but we were shocked to see that un-elected Liberal Democrat Lords sided with the Conservatives and against workers, to water down the new laws in the House of Lords.
I know you will be disappointed to hear that the Lib Dems have decided to side with the Conservatives when it comes to your rights at work. That's why I'm asking you to write to your Liberal Democrat MP to tell them how much this matters to you, and ask them to vote against the amendment when it comes back to the House of Commons.
The Employment Rights Bill is about rebalancing your rights in the workplace, and making jobs and hours more secure. The right to a contract that reflects your normal hours of work is a key part of that – but the Tory and Lib Dem peers voted it down.
This is a once in a generation opportunity to level the playing field. Together, we can deliver real change.
