We want to find out more about the impact that short or unpredictable hours of work are having on Usdaw members, particularly parents/carers.

About Supporting Parents & Carers

Not Enough Hours in the Day

Each year Usdaw holds a campaign day called Supporting Parents and Carers Spotlight Day. Hundreds of reps and activists get involved by running campaigns in their workplaces.
This year's spotlight day, themed 'Not Enough Hours in the Day', highlighted the fact that short hours contracts put parents and carers under particular pressure. They can leave members without the hours they want and need to get by and make the already difficult task of juggling work with caring for someone that much harder.

How this helps you

We want to let members know that:

  • The Union understands that changes to contracts and demands for ever greater flexibility are making it harder for members who are parents and carers.
  • We can help with problems like hours of work or needing time off to care.
  • We can signpost members to appropriate support organisations where difficulties balancing work with care commitments are causing problems outside of work.
