New Welsh Government rules on workplace social distancing are welcome says Usdaw

Date: 07 April 2020 Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed new Welsh Government rules, that come into force today, to protect workers during the coronavirus outbreak. The regulations will mean the two-metre social distancing rule will apply to any workplace.
All businesses will have to take all reasonable measures to ensure the two-metre rule is maintained between people on their premises whenever work is being carried out.

First Minister, Mark Drakeford AM said: “We have asked people to stay at home, to save lives and protect the NHS. These temporary restrictions on gatherings and the movement of people in Wales are an important part of our efforts to help protect the public from the spread of coronavirus.

“These new regulations will ensure workers are safe in the workplace, by ensuring the social distancing measures we have put in place also apply in all people’s places of work.”

Nick Ireland – Usdaw Divisional Officer said: “Shopworkers and their colleagues in the food supply chain, including those in warehouses and distribution centres, are on the frontline of feeding Wales during the current crisis. They are providing an essential service in very difficult circumstances, working long hours in busy stores, facing abuse from customers and of course concerned they may contract Covid-19.

“Our communities need shops, but we need to keep all workers in the food supply chain safe so they can stay open. So we are pleased that the Welsh Government recognises the heroic efforts our members are making and have introduced these new social distancing rules.

“We continue to work with employers to improve health and safety for staff, particularly those dealing directly with the public. We also call on customers to stay calm, respect shopworkers and practise the necessary hygiene measures to help limit the spread of the virus. We all have to work together to get through this crisis.”
