Usdaw launches a Thunderclap ahead of the campaign day to get ‘A better deal for dads’

Date: 23 April 2018 Each year the shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw holds a campaign day called Supporting Parents and Carers Spotlight Day. Hundreds of reps and activists get involved by running campaigns in their workplaces. This year's Spotlight day will take place on Wednesday 16 May 2018 with the theme ‘A better deal for dads’.
The campaign will be highlighting the poor state of rights to time off work for fathers and partners of new mothers. Usdaw wants the Government to better support working dads and partners of new mothers and adoptive parents, including:

  • Longer and better paid paternity leave
  • A right to paid time off work to accompany expectant mums to antenatal appointments
  • More flexible paternity leave

John Hannett – Usdaw General Secretary says: “Helping dads and partners to look after a new child is good for everyone. It allows dads to stay involved in childcare even after they go back to work, children bond better with their dads and mums don't end up doing all the caring in the family. It’s all about creating awareness and I hope people will join our Thunderclap and use social media to help achieve that.”
