Usdaw congratulates Mencap on 70 years of supporting people with a learning disability

Date: 28 November 2016 Today is the 70th anniversary of Mencap. Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has paid tribute to the work the charity has done over those years to promote a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.
John Hannett – Usdaw General Secretary says: “We are very proud to have linked up with Mencap this year as part of celebrating Usdaw’s 125th anniversary. Mencap supports people with a learning disability, their parents and carers, on a range of issues including work, housing and much more.

“People with a learning disability have the lowest employment rate among disabled people, with only two in ten being in paid work, despite an estimated 80% being able and willing to work. So whilst Usdaw and our members have been raising money for Mencap; we have also been linking in with their efforts to help employers understand more about learning disability.

“We look forward to an ongoing and productive relationship beyond our respective anniversary years. On behalf of Usdaw I congratulate Mencap on their 70th year and wish them many more successful campaigning years to come.”
