Usdaw welcomes better deal for apprentices09 September 2008Usdaw, the shopworkers’ union, has welcomed today’s announcement of the increase in minimum earnings for apprentices. John Denham made the announcement at the TUC conference today that minimum weekly earnings for all apprentices in England will be increased from £80 to £95 per week from August 2009. This rise will benefit an estimated 26,000 (about 10 percent) apprentices. John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, said: “We applaud the government’s announcement of this wage increase for apprentices. Apprentices form the backbone of our workforce – young people learning trades which contribute both to the economy and their own futures. “Better pay for apprentices will encourage more people to enrol on them. We welcome the government’s aspirations for 50,000 more young people to start apprenticeships each year.” Notes to Editors:
