Usdaw calls for higher cap on redundancy pay

08 September 2008

Usdaw, the shopworkers’ union, has called for an increase in the level of the cap on preferential debts in insolvency. The current cap of £800 has not been increased since 1976.

The union joined with other unions at the TUC conference in calling to close the legal loophole that allows employers to evade their legal and moral duties to consult and to abandon their financial responsibilities to their staff, passing on their liabilities to the taxpayer.

The motion was carried at the conference this afternoon, Monday 8 September.

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, commented:

“It is always upsetting to be made redundant, and it can also be a worrying time financially. It is important that employers consult with their staff, and make them part of the process, helping the employee to plan for their future.

“We are particularly concerned to see an increase in the level of statutory redundancy pay and an increase in the cap on preferential debts in insolvency. That is why we, and other unions, will be calling on the Government to raise the limits, in order to ease the burden on hard working members who are facing redundancy.”
