Minister to speak at Usdaw Annual Conference

21 April 2008

Cabinet Minister, Hazel Blears, is set to speak at the Annual Delegate Meeting for Usdaw, the UK’s fourth largest union, held this April in Blackpool.

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, said:

“We are delighted to welcome such an esteemed guest as Hazel Blears to our Annual Delegate Meeting. We work very closely with Hazel to increase the quality of the working lives of Usdaw’s members, particularly ‘Freedom from Fear’, our campaign to protect retail staff from violence and abuse in the workplace.”

On Sunday 27 April, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and MP for Salford, Hazel Blears, will be launching Usdaw’s new booklet – ‘What’s the Labour Government ever done for us?’ The booklet gives real examples of improvements that have been brought in by the Labour Government and Usdaw members who have benefited.

As well as all of the work-related issues like pay, employment rights and health and safety, other subjects included on the agenda will be; the environment, equality, housing, pensions, transport, disability, politics and international affairs.

Usdaw’s ADM will be held at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens from 27 to 30 April 2008 and will be attended by approximately 1,500 representatives of Usdaw’s 359,000 members. Usdaw is the fourth largest union in the UK and represents shopworkers, factory and warehouse workers, drivers, clerical workers, insurance workers, butchers, slaughterhouse workers, meat packers, milk round and dairy process workers.
