Ruth Kelly to address Usdaw’s national conference

19 April 2005

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly will be a keynote speaker at retail union Usdaw’s national conference in Blackpool which starts on Sunday April 24th.

She will be backing the union’s national parents and carers campaign and giving 1,300 delegates details of new policies to help hard working families if Labour win a historic third term in government.

“Ruth Kelly has been an enthusiastic supporter of our parents and carers campaign and we’re delighted such a senior minister will address our conference,” says Usdaw General Secretary John Hannett. “Labour has really delivered the goods for our members on the minimum wage and tax breaks for low paid, hard working people.”

“Our members are keen to hear from Ruth Kelly what more a Labour government will do for those who look after children and disabled relatives.”

The Chancellor, Gordon Brown, has also been invited to speak at the conference.

Rights at work, protecting retail staff from workplace violence, pensions and increased parents and carers rights will be at the heart of the agenda during the four-day conference, which runs from Sunday April 24th to Wednesday April 27th in the Empress Ballroom in the historic Winter Gardens.

“This is Usdaw’s parliament and our members input is vital to the work we do all year round,” John Hannett said. “ This conference gives our members their democratic right to have a say and we expect some lively debates if past conferences are anything to go by.”

Notes for Editors:

• This is a closed conference so all journalists will need to apply to Media Officer Paul Clarke as soon as possible before conference for accreditation.

• TV crews will be allotted a fixed point on the balcony in the Empress Ballroom.

• Photographers will be allowed into a fixed point on the conference floor for pictures.

• Usdaw is providing a live feed of all keynote speeches in a separate facility for all journalists who DO NOT have prior accreditation. This will be the ONLY facility for journalists as there is no space available on the conference floor and our stewards will not under any circumstances allow you onto the conference floor.
