Introductory Courses

• Shop Stewards' Intro
  All new shop stewards should try to attend this course.

  All new health and safety reps should try to attend this course.

  Usdaw reps and members who are interested in becoming a Union Learning Rep should attend this course.

  Newly appointed branch officers are invited to attend this course.

Development Courses

• Shop Steward's Follow-on
  The main focus of this course is to build on the skills, knowledge and attributes developed on the introductory course.

• Health and Safety Reps' Follow-on
  This course builds on the topics covered on the introductory course.
`
• Collective Bargaining
  A two or three-day course aimed at more experienced representatives who have a role in collective bargaining.
`
• Rights at Work
  A two or three-day course aimed at more experienced representatives who wish to build their understanding of the law at work.
`
• Maternity Rights
  This new course will be held over either one or two days and will be tailored to suit the reps attending each course.
`
• Essential Skills for Reps
  This course is being piloted in some divisions in 2004.
`
• Summer School First Series
  This course is open to all members with each Divisional Council deciding who will be represented from their Division.
`
• Summer School Second Series
  This course is open to those members who have attended either the first series summer school or the branch officer’s course. Each Divisional Council decides who will represent their Division.
`
• Organising the Workplace
  This course is for reps who want to boost union membership and organisation in their workplace.
`
• Workshops and Briefings
  One off courses are also available.

Other Courses

• Home Study
  Usdaw’s home study course is based on booklets which members complete in their own time at home. It's not about tests or lots of writing - but aims to help members find out more about Usdaw.

• Federation Events
  A number of Usdaw branches affiliate to their local Usdaw Federation. A Federation is the coming together of nearby branches to discuss issues that are relevant to their members.
`
• Divisional Workshops
  Workshops can be set up for groups of reps within a Division, especially when such courses are linked to a particular campaign.
`
• Organising Academy
  The Usdaw Organising Academy provides Usdaw reps with the opportunity to spend six months on secondment to Usdaw combining residential training with participating in a variety of organising projects.
