Usdaw delighted at £10 a month tax break14 May 2008Shopworkers Union, Usdaw, is delighted at the Chancellor’s announcement that the income tax personal allowance will be increased by £600 to give an extra £120 a year to all basic rate taxpayers. Since the original announcement on the abolition of the 10p tax rate in the 2007 Budget, Usdaw has been campaigning to make up any shortfall for its members. John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, commented: “We are delighted that the Government has now addressed this situation. The majority of retail staff are on or just above the National Minimum Wage, and those who could not claim tax credits lost out from the abolition of the 10p tax band. This announcement not only aims to redress this situation but also means that 600,000 low paid workers will be taken out of income tax. “In addition, thousands of Usdaw members were made better off by the increases in tax credits that were announced in the Budget, and with food and fuel costs rising fast this extra help, announced today, will give a further important boost to low-paid workers.” Notes to Editors:
