Usdaw welcomes Prime Minister's clear commitment to include the Labour Party in his Government's 'direction of travel'16 March 2006Usdaw General Secretary John Hannett has warmly welcomed the Prime Minister's commitment to make sure the Labour Party is more closely involved in the 'direction of travel' the Government intends to take during a historic third term. “Usdaw was one of the unions at the forefront of winning another term for Labour and we're delighted the Prime Minister has recognised that Labour Party members have a key role in helping define the 'direction of travel' this Government intends to take,” said John Hannett. “We welcome his clear commitment to engage much more closely with Labour Party members and activists as that link and positive debate has produced many of the innovative reforms that have transformed Britain for the better over the last decade. “Usdaw members owe much to Labour as they introduced the minimum wage which transformed the lives of many of our members. Progressive unions like Usdaw also have an important role to play in making sure the rights of workers are defended and improved as the Warwick Agreement very clearly demonstrated. “We look forward to engaging with the Prime Minister in a debate about the future of 'public services for a generation' and the concerns of low paid workers in the retail sector. “We're confident this renewed commitment to listening to the Labour Party will prove to be a defining moment for the future success of this Government.” Notes to Editors:
