Home Pensions Starting a Pension
Problems you might have trying to join a company schemeMost people will be accepted into their employer's pension scheme without a hitch, but there are some who might run into problems. Part-time workers If you are a part-time worker this should not be a reason for refusing you membership of the pension scheme. If you are refused membership on these grounds contact Usdaw for help. Delaying your application to join the scheme If you apply to join the scheme some time after joining the company you may be asked to complete a medical questionnaire. The purpose of the questionnaire will be to prevent someone who has a serious illness applying to join the scheme shortly after being diagnosed in order to cash in on the valuable ill-health or death benefits offered to members. Someone who applies late and has a medical condition may find that the scheme will only admit them on a restricted basis, for example no ill-health pension will be paid. Disability Disability may be taken into account in deciding whether to admit someone into a scheme but only after proper enquiries have been made about the disability and a fair decision made. The Disability Discrimination Act does apply to the terms on which employees are admitted to membership of company pension schemes. Contact Usdaw promptly if you are refused membership and you think that you were treated unfairly. One chance to join Some schemes have a rule that gives new staff only get one opportunity to join. If this applies to you make sure that you don't delay getting your application in to the company.
