Starting a Pension

Why start a pension?
Everyone needs money to live on when they retire. How much money you have will make the difference between enjoying retirement in security and simply getting by.

Can I rely on just the State Pension?
Probably not, because of a number of problems with State Pensions and uncertainty about what will happen in future. What pension policies will future Governments have?

Can't I wait until I'm older?
Good company pension schemes are now being closed to new members or having their benefits reduced.

How can I find out if my employer has a pension scheme?
Ask your supervisor, manager or Human Resources or Personnel Officer whether there is a pension scheme for you to join.

How much will it cost me?
Nearly all company pension schemes want a contribution from members, as a condition of membership, but the actual cost of joining may be less than you think.

Problems you might have trying to join a company scheme
Most people will be accepted into their employer's pension scheme without a hitch, but there are some who might run into problems.

Answering the doubts you might have
Not convinced about joining a scheme? Take a look at some of the reasons why people don't join and what we say in reply.
