The Legal Department at Central Office has a specialist Pensions Section to support lay and full-time officers and to help members.

The primary role of the Pensions Section is to assist in the development of pension policy and organisation within Usdaw and to defend and develop occupational pension schemes.

The section provides advice and technical support to Usdaw’s officials and members on the collective issues relating to pensions.

The section also gives advice and assistance to individual members in respect of the operation of their company pension schemes and may take up individual cases on behalf of members through company procedures, Internal Dispute Resolution Procedures, the Pension Ombudsman and legal channels.

The union cannot give members individual financial advice on pension-related matters. Instead we explain the issues to allow members to make informed decisions.

The section provides briefings on general pension issues to members and officials and analysis of specific schemes.
