Police Cuts Petition
Petition to protect shopworkers from violence and
abuse by opposing police cuts to be Presented to the House of
Commons.
To the House of Commons assembled. The Petition of shopworkers
and supporters of England and Wales and others of like disposition
declares that shopworkers have the right to be safe at work, free
from fear of violence, threats and verbal abuse, and treated with
the respect they deserve.
That the significant increases in numbers of uniformed police
officers over the last ten years has helped improve safety for
shopworkers, with overall crime decreasing by 43% and incidents
against shopworkers less than half the 2004 levels, as recorded by
the British Retail Consortium's Annual Retail Crime Survey.
That despite these improvements there is still more to do as
every minute of every day yet another shopworker is assaulted,
threatened or abused.
The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons
shall urge the Government to ensure that the downward trend in
overall crime and attacks on shopworkers continues by at least
maintaining the 2010 levels of uniformed police officers in England
and Wales.
