Why Usdaw is endorsing David Miliband
Date: 22 July 2010
Following the endorsement by Usdaw's Executive Council of David Miliband for leader of the Labour Party, Usdaw's General Secretary commented.
"Usdaw members
know the difference it makes having Labour in power. Working with
the trade union movement, Labour delivered big gains for
working people and their families in government. Better schools and
hospitals, new rights at work and higher living standards through
the minimum wage and tax credits. The Tories and the Lib Dems are
putting all that progress at risk - with failed 1980s economic
policies that will cost jobs and hit essential public services.
This is a government as right-wing as any since Thatcher and the
price will be paid - as it is whenever the Tories get their hands
on power - by working people.
"That's why we must elect a
leader who can unite Labour, take on the Tories and win the next
general election. That's the responsibility of each and every one
of us - and it's why I'm proud that Usdaw is backing David Miliband
for leader. David knows that we lost the last election badly and
knows what it takes to rebuild our movement from the grassroots -
drawing on our greatest asset: ordinary party members and trade
unionists up and down the country. That's the way we will ensure we
give voice to the voiceless and power to the powerless - which is
what our movement was founded to do.
"I've known David for a long
time and know he can deliver real change - in getting new schools
built, strengthening local government, tackling climate change and
standing up for human rights and democracy abroad. I can also see
that he is really energised by this leadership campaign and the
prospect of standing up for Labour values against this
government.
"When he met Usdaw
members at Morrisons' Wincanton Distribution Depot in
Northampton he listened and understood their concerns - and they
saw real leadership qualities in him.
"David's strong showing
among CLPs shows he is the grassroots candidate in this election.
This is a man who can deliver for Labour - and I hope party members
and trade unionists will join me in supporting him."
