New Northern Ireland HQ for Usdaw

27 October 2004

Usdaw, one of the UK's biggest trade unions, officially opens its new Northern Ireland base on Monday (1st November 2004), as it continues a sustained period of membership growth.

Usdaw's work in Northern Ireland, including its industrial, political and campaigning operations, will be co-ordinated from its new modern offices in Stockmans Way, Belfast. The office includes conference and training facilities, and is the base for three officials and two clerical staff.

Usdaw's membership has recently increased considerably in Northern Ireland - where the total number of Usdaw members is now fast-approaching 10,000. Many Usdaw members in Northern Ireland work for leading retailers including Tesco, Safeway, J Sainsbury, The Co-op and Primark, as well as drinks manufacturer and distributor Coca-Cola.

The union's staff have now moved from its previous base in Wellington Park, Belfast, to the new-build accommodation in Stockmans Way. John Hannett, the General Secretary of Usdaw, will officially open the new office at a short ceremony, attended by invited guests, on Monday.

John Hannett said: "Northern Ireland has been one of the major success stories for Usdaw in recent years, particularly in terms of recruitment. During the last year alone, our membership figure has increased by about 15 per cent in Northern Ireland. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of our reps and officials. These new offices will provide much improved facilities, allowing Usdaw to train, advise and support our members to the highest standards."

Media Opportunity:

Journalists and photographers are invited to attend the official opening, which takes place at 12.30pm on Monday 1st November 2004 at the offices of Usdaw, First Floor, Unit 2, 41 Stockmans Way, Belfast, BT9 7ET. Tel: 028 9066 3773. John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, will be available for interview.

Notes to Editors:
