Official opening of Usdaw's National Conference and Training Centre

Sir Bill Connor, General Secretary of Usdaw, the UK's fifth largest trade union, will officially open the union's National Conference and Training Centre in Warrington on Friday 12 March.

The building is also the HQ for the union's North West division, which covers North West England, North Wales and Northern Ireland.

Usdaw has over 330,000 members in the UK, including about 80,000 in the North West division - which makes it the union's biggest division in terms of membership. The majority of members are shopworkers, although the union has members working in several industries including home shopping, call centres, road transport, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Joining Sir Bill Connor at the official opening will be Usdaw's General Secretary Elect John Hannett and Usdaw North West Divisional Officer John McGarry, as well as members of the union's North West Divisional Council, local employers, regional TUC officials, and Usdaw representatives and officials.

The two-storey building at Warrington boasts impressive conference and training facilities, in addition to offices for regional officials and support staff. Warrington is the main office of five in the division - the others being Liverpool, Preston, Crewe and Belfast.

Usdaw plays a lead role in several high-profile national and regional campaigns, including:

• Freedom From Fear, the Usdaw campaign to raise awareness about violence and abuse in the retail workplace, and to improve safety for shopworkers.

• Legislation to ban larger stores opening on Christmas Day.

• Calling for a National Minimum Wage for 16 and 17 year-olds.
