Official opening of Usdaw's new Aberdeen office
19 February 2004
Sir Bill Connor, General Secretary of Usdaw, the UK's fifth largest trade union, will officially open the union's new office in Aberdeen.
This office will be the base for seven staff, including three area organisers, covering North East Scotland and central Highlands.
Usdaw has over 330,000 members in the UK, including around 36,000 in Scotland. Most members are shopworkers, although the union has members working in several industries including home shopping, call centres, road transport, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Joining Sir Bill Connor at the official opening will be Usdaw's Scottish Divisional Officer Bruce Fraser, as well as members of the union's Scottish Divisional Council.
The new Aberdeen office, which replaces a previous base in Holburn Street, Aberdeen, boasts impressive facilities for training shop stewards and union reps. Aberdeen is one of three Usdaw offices in Scotland - the other two being in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Area Organisers perform a pivotal role in the day-to-day activities of Usdaw. They deal with members on an individual or collective basis, offering advice and assistance on a range of issues including wage negotiations, grievance procedures and recruitment of new members.
Usdaw plays a lead role in several high-profile campaigns in Scotland, including:
- Freedom From Fear, the Usdaw campaign to raise awareness about violence and abuse in the retail workplace, and to improve safety for shopworkers.
- Giving shopworkers the same right enjoyed by shopworkers in England and Wales to opt-out of working on Sundays (this becomes a right in Scotland from 6th April 2004).
- For press releases, statistics and background information, visit Campaigns.
