Usdaw website in line for online global award

13 January 2004

Usdaw's website is in the running for a global award, just eight months after its hugely successful relaunch. Over 100,000 visitors have logged on to www.usdaw.org.uk since the new-look site went live in April 2003. They have viewed over half-a-million pages.

The site has played a significant role in recruiting new members to the trade union, with 541 joining by the online application process - which means one in every 185 visitors has chosen to join Usdaw online.

More than 5,000 people are currently subscribed to the Usdaw news mailing service, receiving regular updates with news and information.

The popular search engine Google ranks the Usdaw site as the first choice for all of the following subjects 'retail violence', 'respect day', 'shopworkers union', 'santa watch' and "calculating working tax'.

And now the site has been nominated for 'Labour Website of the Year', alongside sites from the USA, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa and - for the first time - Iraq.

Last year's winner was the Australian site Workers Online.

Vote here for the Usdaw site and enter your e-mail address in the voting box, as directed. You can vote up to 31st January 2004.

Many visitors contact Usdaw with praise for the new website. Comments have included:

  • ...Just to congratulate you on a brilliant website. I'm a union and H&S rep for Usdaw and the site has vastly improved. The 'Ask Jan' page is especially good.
  • ...Good information about Sunday trading and about working in the heat. I know if I am unsure about my rights at work I can go on the website for advice as I have no union rep where I work.
  • ...It has been a while since I last used the website and I would just like to comment on the improvements made. It is much more professional, full of useful help and up-to-date news. I will not hesitate at encouraging our members to have a look at it. Well done.
  • ...Many thanks to whoever came up with this idea, it is an excellent way to keep us abreast of what our union is doing and thinking. I pick up my e-mail every day, and have read each 'Usdaw news' bulletin sent
