Legal Plus service delivers again and again for members

29 May 2003

Usdaw members and their families shared more than £16 million last year, thanks to the union’s improved Legal Plus service.

"We take great pride in the quality service we provide for our members," said Legal Officer Kate O'Neill. "The figures for 2002 clearly show that the Legal Plus service is a major benefit to our members and their families.

"Last year the service reached more members than ever before. We also expanded the scope of legal help.

"We are also at the cutting edge of the law, in that we are committed to championing those cases which may make new law and improve the rights of working people."

Personal injury cases made up more than £14 million proving, once again, Usdaw members have no need for the so-called 'no win no fee' deals available on the high street. Unfair dismissal cases made up the majority of the employment caseload with £1,073,186 won in negotiated settlements or at employment tribunals. Support for members in discrimination and equal pay claims continued, and long-term improvements in work practices, as well as compensation, were won.

  • In addition there were 4,975 applications to Legal Plus for free wills for members and their partners, as well as legal help on other problems not connected with work.
  • More than 7,300 members and their families have used the free will service alone in the last three years.
