Brush up on your skills

Date: 01 August 2003

Brush up on your skills
Brush up on your skills

Would you like to... • Brush up on your reading and writing skills • Improve your communication skills • Develop better number skills

Why Usdaw Members are 'Brushing Up' on their Skills

Many Usdaw members are in jobs that don't give them the opportunity to develop or improve their own essential skills.

Skills such as reading, writing and number skills, will go rusty of they are not used often enough.

Like seven million other people in the country, Usdaw members need the chance to 'Brush Up' on their basic skills for many different reasons such as...

  • To understand wage slips, income tax or pensions
  • To fill in forms or write a letter
  • To help the kids with their homework
  • To get to grips with centimetres and kilos!
  • To adapt to changes at work or even get a better job!

"Going to the Maths and English club on site really helped me to understand my daughter's homework and gave me the confidence to discuss it with her teacher."
Sandra, Reality Wigan

"I left school nearly 28 years ago and never had an opportunity to carry on studying. I recently started an evening course but was struggling with my grammar and spelling. Thanks to our learning centre I can now improve my skills right here in the workplace"
Hemma, Littlewoods Croal

Usdaw can help to arrange Essential Skills and Basic Skills courses FREE for all union members.

Essential Skills programmes cater for all levels. From basic entry level up to pre-GCSE and courses are tailored to suit individual needs
