Learning in store for Adult Learners’ Week11 May 2009Usdaw members are celebrating Adult Learners’ Week (9 to 15 May) by holding events all around the UK. In the last two years, more than 14,000 Usdaw members have returned to some form of learning, with many of them starting to learn during Adult Learners’ Week. Events are taking place all across the UK in Boots, Tesco Distribution and Retail, DHL, Co-operative Retail Logistics, Sainsbury’s, Shop Direct, Argos and McVities. Usdaw has helped set up over 50 workplace learning centres and have a network of over 700 Union Learning Reps helping members get back into learning. John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, said: “Usdaw’s Lifelong Learning Campaign changes the lives of many members, who often get to grips with Maths, English and vocational subjects for the first time. Adult Learners’ Week is an excellent time to celebrate this. “At Usdaw, we believe it is important that people who haven’t had the opportunity to access learning after the age of 16 are given the chance to pick up where they left off, and it is equally important that that learning is affordable for everyone. The courses boost their self-confidence and can often lead to better career opportunities. It is also good for their employer because all our evidence shows an educated workforce is better motivated with less staff turnover and less absenteeism.” Usdaw is the fourth largest union in the UK with over 370,000 members. It represents workers in retail, home shopping, distribution and warehousing, meat and dairy processing, food manufacturing and pharmaceuticals.
