Usdaw welcomes right to request time to train23 June 2008Shopworkers’ union, Usdaw, is welcoming the Government’s announcement that workers in England will be given a new right to request time off for training relevant to their job. The Union will be taking part in the consultation on how to implement the new right, which could be in place by 2010. The right will work similarly to the right to request flexible working, where employers are required to consider all requests and take part in a meaningful conversation about the request. However, the employer will still have the ultimate right to refuse. John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, commented: “Access to training in work-related skills helps to build morale and loyalty amongst employees. In addition, the company’s skills base and productivity increases – everyone wins. “We support this news that all workers will be able to have their request for work related training taken seriously and will be contributing to the consultation process to ensure that we get the best possible deal for our members.” Notes to Editors:
