Workers get healthy start to their learning lives29 May 2008During Adult Learners’ Week, Usdaw, the shopworkers’ union, signed learning agreements with Kelloggs and First Milk, both based in Wrexham. Usdaw General Secretary, John Hannett, opened a learning centre for Usdaw members at the Kelloggs factory in Wrexham. John also signed agreements allowing Usdaw Learning Reps to work at the two manufacturers, helping staff to gain valuable skills and qualifications. John commented: “We are delighted to have signed these new agreements to bring life long learning to members at Kelloggs and First Milk. Our members are always keen to take up the opportunity to access courses that will change their lives, including Maths, English and vocational subjects. In 2007 over 600 members signed up for life long learning courses. “Our members want the chance to learn more, boost their self-confidence and, often, progress on to better careers. It’s also good for the employers, because all our evidence shows an educated workforce is a thriving workforce with less staff turnover and less absenteeism.” Usdaw is the fourth largest union in the UK with over 359,000 members. It represents workers in retail, home shopping, distribution and warehousing, meat and dairy processing, food manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. Notes to Editors:
