Usdaw launches innovative learning drive at Greggs bakery in Rutherglen

11 September 2006

Retail union Usdaw has launched an innovative Lifelong Learning project at Greggs bakery in Rutherglen.

Bakers, delivery drivers and shop staff from nine stores across Glasgow will be taking part in a learning roadshow at the Southcroft Road site on Tuesday September 12th meeting reps from local colleges to find out what courses are on offer.

Union Learning Reps Martin Taylor and David Hughes, who work in the bakery, have joined forces with Muriel Cameron – working with Greggs – and are the driving forces behind the project.

They’ve been out and about on the shopfloor persuading staff to visit the roadshow.

“I was amazed at what’s out there on our doorstep with a massive number of courses on a huge range of topics,” says Martin. “There’s literally something for everyone. We want to open doors for those we work with because our colleagues are interested and we know they can do it.”

The learning drive is part of a new initiative between Usdaw and Greggs who have provided on-site facilities to make sure their workers can access courses that will boost their confidence.

Muriel Cameron will be visiting staff at nine Greggs shops making sure they know about the wide range of courses on offer.

“Greggs have been massively supportive of the Usdaw project providing complete access to their workforce,” said Muriel Cameron. “I am determined the staff in the shops don’t miss out on these opportunities so I will be visiting stores to let staff know what’s available to them, and how I can assist them to get funding to support their learning.”

“This is a win-win situation for our members and for Greggs. This is an exciting initiative which has been made possible with funding from the Scottish Executive.”
