Tesco staff check out free learning

31 October 2004

Staff at the Tesco store in Stowmarket, West Suffolk have been making the most of a special offer, to check out a free learning programme.

West Suffolk College, in collaboration with the Usdaw Union Learning Rep, has been offering Skills for Life courses at the store.

The programme is based around a flexible menu of learning which gives employees an opportunity to improve their information technology, literacy and numeracy skills and gain a recognised national qualification. The provision is free, and offered on site in the training room, between 5.30pm and 7.30pm to allow for employees coming off shift.

“This course has been a great success throughout the summer,” said Linda Anslow, a West Suffolk College Skills for Life tutor who co-tutored the programme with IT instructor Keith Bloomfield.

She added: “The successful learners have achieved qualifications in word processing at beginner and intermediate level and several learners also passed the new National Literacy and Numeracy Tests at level one. Ten new learners have now signed up for a second programme at the store.

The shopworkers’ union Usdaw currently has a training programme to create Union Learning Representatives in large stores. Under new legislation Union Learning Reps are entitled to paid time to set up learning opportunities in the workplace through local training providers.

West Suffolk College provided laptops for the course and two tutors for the group, ensuring individual help and tuition could be given when needed.
