First Eureka forum

The Eureka Norfolk/Suffolk project enjoyed its first Union Learning Rep forum recently. 20 ULR’s from Norfolk and Suffolk met together at the Usdaw Bury St Edmunds office to network, train and share experience.

The reps were from a variety of companies including the Co-op, Tesco, Somerfield and Safeway – to name but a few.

The day was organised to give the ULR’s hands-on experience of basic skills assessments and the national literacy and numeracy tests.

Representatives from Norwich City College, Training Matters and Suffolk Information, Advice and Guidance were invited to give presentations along with practical advice.

The reps were given the chance to sit mock assessments and national literacy and numeracy tests. “It was an excellent opportunity,” said Sheridan Smith from Tesco Express Norwich. “I think first hand experience of the things we are asking our members to do is important.”

Shariff Shariff from City College Norwich also welcomed the opportunity to meet so many reps at one time. “It was beneficial to me to have the understanding of their role and how best we can bring Lifelong Learning to Usdaw members.

Some of the reps were surprised at their own results. “I had no idea I was that capable”, said Janice Mann from Somerfield. “It has given my confidence a tremendous boost. I have now enrolled on an IT course and intend to sit the national literacy and numeracy tests for real.

The day ended with everybody taking part in a psychometric test with Tim Granville from Suffolk IAG. This was purely a fun event for the reps and was a great way to end the day. It gave everyone an insight into themselves with possible ideas for self-development. Lynn Jones, project coordinator for Eureka felt that the day was a huge success. “I couldn’t get them to go home”, said Lynn. “The day raised their confidence and they all felt better equipped to encourage members to get involved.”
