Unions identify skills training needs at closure biscuits factory

11 February 2004

Usdaw learning reps are playing a key role in ensuring workers get access to the best in skills training at a biscuits factory that is closing in December.

Learning reps at Usdaw and Amicus are determined that the 800 workers who will lose their jobs when the United Biscuits factory closes in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, should get as many skills and qualifications as possible.

In just 10 days recently, around 600 learning needs interviews were carried out by reps from the two unions. This revealed a big demand for introductory and higher level IT courses, as well as help to brush up numeracy and literacy skills.

Arrangements are now being made with local service provider Stephenson College, as well as the local Learning and Skills Council, to deliver courses on site. Learning reps are also offering advice and information on courses elsewhere.

Employees will have access to retraining opportunities through the Government's Rapid Response programme, but the unions were determined to help people get access to learning prior to entering their 12-week notice periods.

Ed Leach, Usdaw's deputy convenor and union learning rep co-ordinator at the site, said: "We have been really pleased with the response to the questionnaires and will now set about meeting the needs identified.

"This is not an easy time for staff in Ashby, but we are confident that by working with the company and the college, the unions can make sure that people leave this company with as many skills and qualifications as possible."

United Biscuits announced in February 2003 that it was closing the biscuits factory at Ashby at the end of 2004, moving production to other sites in the UK. The Ashby site makes McVities and retailer-branded biscuits.

  • Usdaw is the UK's fifth largest trade union with over 330,000 members. More information and news releases are available at our online Newsroom.
