Safeway workers take the high road to learning21 July 2003Shopworkers at the Safeway stores in Troon, Prestwick, Ayr and Cumnock are looking forward to learning and earning when they take advantage of new lifelong learning opportunities – part of a ground-breaking initiative between their union Usdaw and employer Safeway. A special roadshow will visit the stores this week to publicise the courses available and sign up new learners on anything from computers to languages. Usdaw learning rep Dorothy Mackie, from the Prestwick store, said: “This is a great opportunity for Safeway workers to increase their skills and knowledge. Both for their own personal development and also to gain recognised qualifications.” MSP Sandra Osborne is lending her support to the project and will be visiting the store during the day. Representatives from local colleges will also be on hand at all the stores to give advice about the courses available. Learning rep, Liz McHugh from the Troon store, said: “Everyone at my store is very excited about the new initiative. Most of the staff have already got courses in mind that they want to study and computers is very popular. These opportunities will open new doors for everyone.” Union official Margaret Fleming is the Project Co-ordinator and is confident that the scheme will be a huge success. “The project has already taken off across Scotland. The scheme, funded by the Scottish Executive, through the Scottish Learning Fund, aims to deliver lifelong learning to retail workers in Scotland, and these roadshows highlight the latest Safeway stores to get on board.” Note: The roadshows will visit : - Troon store on Wednesday 23rd July (10:00am - 6:00pm) - Prestwick store on Thursday 24th July (10:00am - 6:00pm) - Ayr store on Friday 25th July (10:00am - 6:00pm) - Cumnock store on Tuesday 29th July (10:00am - 3:00pm) For further information contact Margaret Fleming at Usdaw’s Glasgow Office telephone: 0141-427 6561.
