Roadshow will plan Safeway workers’ route to learning23 June 2003Shopworkers at stores in Newton Stewart, Stanraer and Girvan are all set to cash in on new learning opportunities being promoted as part of a ground-breaking initiative from Usdaw and Safeway. A special roadshow will visit the stores this week to publicise the opportunities available and sign up potential students on courses ranging from computers to languages. Usdaw learning rep Stuart Lynch, from the Newton Stewart store, said: "This is an exciting development. It has generated loads of enthusiasm. Workers are looking to upgrade their skills and jump on the learning bandwagon. It's great news for our members at the store." Colleague and learning rep Angela Gibson, from Girvan, echoed his sentiments. "This is a great opportunity for the workforce to further their education," she said, "not just for qualifications, but for their personal fulfilment and their own enjoyment." Stranraer's learning rep Janine Allen is looking forward to the roadshow's arrival. "This is a win-win situation," she said. "Individual Safeway workers in the stores will widen their knowledge and expertise, and the company will benefit from improvements in staff skills and morale." Union official Margaret Fleming is the project co-ordinator and is confident the scheme will be a huge success. "This lifelong learning project in Scotland is funded by the Scottish Executive, through the Scottish Learning Fund, and is very popular with shopworkers throughout Safeway's Scottish stores. This latest round of roadshow visits is the latest stage in our campaign to bring learning to Safeway workers." Note The roadshow will visit the Newton Stewart store on Wednesday 26 June; the Girvan store in Ayrshire on Thursday 27 June and the Stranraer store Friday 28 June, from 10am to 6pm.
