Recognition for South West's dedicated learners

14 May 2002

Usdaw Learning Reps in the South West won special praise from TUC leader John Monks when they were awarded certificates on completion of their courses.

The special conference, organised by the South West TUC, highlighted the importance of the food and drink sector to the South West economy.

Marie Hughes, project worker for TUC Learning Services, said: "Receiving their certificates from John Monks gave the reps the recognition they deserve for the hard work they have done during the last year.

"They have worked tirelessly in their workplaces to promote learning amongst members."

The event was dedicated to learning in the workplace and brought together reps from Heinz in Devon, Birds Eye Walls and Wincanton Distribution, both in Gloucester. Various initiatives are in place at all sites to promote learning.

The Heinz site has just received extra funding from Devon & Cornwall Learning and Skills Council, to set up a Learning Centre. Union Learning Reps on site are working in partnership with managers to encourage Lifelong Learning amongst the workforce.

Reps at the two Wincanton sites in Gloucester have run learning promotions, IT tasters and skills checks for around 150 members.

A bid has been submitted by Usdaw to continue the Deliver Project for a second year. A strategy for Lifelong Learning in the distribution sector across the South West region will be rolled out over the coming months.

Wincanton Learning Rep George Dunn said: "Work is progressing on all sites to develop confidence in learning by identifying and organising a whole range of courses from IT and foreign languages to recreational pursuits.

"If it can't be run in the workplace we will help members find the course they want nearby and support them."

The team of reps at Birds Eye Walls continue to support and encourage members who have taken the Springboard course into learning by helping them to identify what their future learning needs will be.
