Local MP gives his backing to Usdaw on Lifelong Learning14 January 2002The efforts of Usdaw's Learning Reps won the praise of senior Government officials last year for their dedication and commitment in raising the skills level at their workplace.
Secretary of State for Education Estelle Morris and local MP Dave Watts made a special visit to the Sainsbury's distribution centre on Haydock, Merseyside. Central to the Lifelong Learning opportunities at the site are Usdaw Learning Reps Jim O'Neil and John Pearce. "We have ten Learning Reps on site," said John, "and another six waiting for training. "The courses are helpful to our members both in and out of work. It was very encouraging to have Estelle Morris and Dave Watts on site to tell us what the Government plan to do and to offer us their support." The reps have worked closely with local management and TUC Learning Services Project Manager Cheryl Wiseman. "The company is fully committed to investing in quality learning for the workforce," she said, "and is working in partnership with Usdaw along with Wigan and Leigh College." Staff and management have shown a strong commitment to the learning initiatives. "It's important that we help our members raise their skills levels," said Jim. "Industry is forever changing and we need to adapt to those changes. Both members and the company have been very supportive."
