Learning changes lives14 May 2002Usdaw recently signed a recognition deal with retailer Ethel Austin. This new working partnership has seen the opening of a new Learning Resource Centre and great opportunities for staff. The union has teamed up with a local college, the company's Human Resource Department and the TUC's Bargaining for Skills.
Learning Rep Amanda Coll is helping colleagues take full advantage of the Learning Resource Centre at Ethel Austin in Liverpool. Since Amanda was elected shop steward she has not looked back. "My life has been turned around during the last 12 months," she said. "From the moment I got involved with the union's Education Department, my whole life has changed for the better. Amanda has completed a three-day shop stewards' training course, the Home Studies Course, a Learner Reps course, an NVQ Assessor course, a basic computer course and an Integrated Business Technology course. She has also completed an Introduction to Counselling course. "Although I've gained certificates, more importantly I've grown as a person both in confidence and I've a greater awareness of what I want to achieve. "I want the new Resource Centre to do exactly the same for my colleagues. "I want to encourage people back into education, who like me had concerns and worries. "Education has given me my life back. I want other people to have access to the same chances and experiences I've had."
