Cash help for members at Open University01 March 2007Union members* looking to improve their qualifications and/or enhance their job prospects can take advantage of Usdaw’s financial assistance for people who study with the Open University. The Open University (OU) offers all adults, and particularly those who have no previous academic qualifications, a unique opportunity to gain a University Degree without leaving home or employment. For these reasons, the union’s Executive Council wishes to maintain its support for the idea of the OU by continuing its scheme of assistance to fully paid-up union members who are registered on the OU degree programme. The award of an OU Ordinary Degree is based upon the successful completion of 360 points. Some students might take a 60-point course per annum and take six years to complete, whilst others may take longer to complete their degree programme. Further details are available direct from the Open University. To be fair to all, therefore, the union’s Grant Scheme will operate on the basis of a current payment of £130 for each 60-point course and £65 in respect of each 30-point course. The grant only applies to OU Modules that form part of a Degree programme (so do not apply for example, to 'Opening' courses). Grants will be made annually on the evidence of satisfactory completion of studies up to a maximum total of £780. If you are interested contact the union’s Education Department at Central Office tel: 0161 224 2804. (* Please note to be eligible for the union's Grant Scheme Usdaw members need to be fully paid up with 12 months' continuous membership.)
