Members catch the learning bug at Ethel Austin

22 July 2002

A groundbreaking learning initiative will see members of the shopworkers’ union Usdaw, employed by Merseyside-based retailer Ethel Austin, receive certificates for completing special training courses.

The courses have been designed to improve workers' skills level and to encourage staff to make the most of the opportunities available to them through lifelong learning.

Usdaw President Marge Carey will be joined by company representatives at the union's Warrington office, on Tuesday 23 July at 1.30 pm, to celebrate the members' achievements and present the certificates

Usdaw and Ethel Austin have worked closely with both the Government and Liverpool Community College to provide funding and facilities for the new learners as part of the Pathfinder Project. Staff have been given paid time-off to study, over an eight week period, as part of the pilot scheme which has been trialled in various parts of the UK.

Usdaw Learning Rep Amanda Coll has been at the centre of the project. "This has been a great success," she said. "Staff have been able to brush up on their English and maths skills and have definitely caught the learning bug. Most of the people involved are already looking to carry on learning.

"I'd like to thank all of the partners for their support. This is another great example of how Usdaw is working with progressive employers to provide learning opportunities for staff, many of whom missed out when they were at school.

"This is a win-win situation for both staff and employers. A well trained workforce is more productive, employees feel valued and morale is high."
