Check out Tesco

06 August 2008

As Usdaw’s highly successful Check Out Learning campaign gathers momentum hundreds of members at Tesco are now on the road to learning as Network found out.

Reps in Scotland are making sure their members do not miss out on the learning agenda and are actively encouraging thousands of new members to sign up.

New ULR Stephen Gray ran a very successful two-day Check Out Learning roadshow at the Tesco Silverburn store in Glasgow in June.

“It was a fantastic turnout,” said Stephen. “Everyone was very enthusiastic and keen to find out what courses were on offer. We had tutors from local colleges who were on hand to answer any questions.

“Many of the people who work here haven’t stepped back inside a classroom since they left school so it was great to see their enthusiasm. Many of them signed up for English, maths and a variety of vocational courses due to start shortly.”

The Check Out Learning roadshow also took to the high roads in July with a visit to the Extra store in Inverness. “The two-day event was a huge success,” said rep Marie Gillies.

“Check Out Learning is good for our members, it boosts their self-confidence and can often lead to better career opportunities.

“Staff will be able to choose from a variety of subjects and vocational courses all provided by Inverness College and the WEA.

“Many of our members have family commitments, so we want to make learning accessible and fun.”
