Employers - Sign the Pledge!05 December 2007In June, the Government launched an initiative to encourage employers to invest more in the training of their staff. The aim is to get employers to commit to training all their staff up to a basic minimum level. The commitment takes the form of a public pledge – a Skills Pledge. We organise in two major companies – Tesco and Sainsbury’s - that have already announced they will sign the pledge and other companies we organise in are likely to follow. At Usdaw’s recent Retail Trade Conference a briefing paper was presented to delegates on the Skills Pledge – on the background to the Pledge and on what the Pledge means for Usdaw members – in the retail sector and more widely. The briefing paper provides a quick, easy to read guide to the pledge for Usdaw activists and Union Learning Reps. This briefing paper is available from the resource section of Usdaw’s website. More information about the Pledge is also available from the TUC’s Unionlearn website. Another useful source of information on the Pledge is the Government’s Train to Gain website. A leaflet called ‘Skills Pledge - A Guide for Employers’ can be found by clicking here.
